How it works in practice

Returns are always linked to their original dispatch
A Return Challan must reference an existing Delivery Challan. This is enforced by design — it prevents orphan transactions, ensures the returned items were actually dispatched, and maintains the full traceability chain.
- RC must reference an existing DC — no standalone return transactions
- Only items that exist on the original DC can be returned
- Full traceability: DC → Return Challan → inventory credit

Track the condition of every returned item
Not all returns are equal. Record per item whether it came back Good, Damaged or Defective. This is essential for determining whether to restock, raise a supplier claim or write off the item.

Partial returns — return only what actually came back
A customer might return two of the four units dispatched. Partial returns are fully supported — create the RC with only the items and quantities being returned. The original DC remains unchanged.

No. Every Return Challan must reference an existing DC. You can only return items that were formally dispatched. If a transaction isn't in the system, create the DC first.
Set the condition field for that line item to 'Damaged' and add a note describing the damage. The condition is stored against the return record — useful for raising claims with the customer's insurer or the manufacturer.
Yes. Partial returns are fully supported. Add only the items being returned, at the quantities being returned. The rest of the DC remains as delivered.
Good-condition returns updating inventory automatically is on the roadmap. Currently, inventory adjustments for returns are handled manually in the Inventory module.
